At 17, Mickey was balancing school and work while navigating uncertainty about where she would sleep and what her future might hold.

When she arrived at Covenant House Toronto, she was met with more than a place to stay. She found a supportive environment where she could begin to rebuild.

Through the organization’s Rights of Passage Program, Mickey moved into transitional housing where she learned essential life skills, from cooking and budgeting to maintaining a home. Just as importantly, she found a sense of community, with staff and mentors who supported her growth and helped her begin to see new possibilities for her life.

Over time, Mickey accessed employment supports and mentorship, eventually securing stable housing and continuing her education.

Today, she has graduated from nursing school and is working in her field, with aspirations to help others facing similar challenges she once experienced.

Her story reflects what becomes possible when young people have access to safe, stable housing at the right moment.

Supporting Youth to Build a Path Forward

Covenant House Toronto serves youth experiencing homelessness, trafficking and housing instability, offering a continuum of care that helps young people move from crisis to independence.

Programs like Rights of Passage provide transitional housing alongside wraparound programs and services, creating the stability needed for youth to pursue education, find employment and build the confidence required for independent living.

For many young people, this stage is critical. Without access to safe, supportive housing, the transition out of homelessness becomes significantly more difficult, increasing the risk of long-term instability.

From Stability to Possibility

Access to transitional housing does more than meet immediate needs. It creates the conditions to support long-term change.

For youth like Mickey, stability becomes the foundation for growth, education and employment. It allows them to move beyond survival and begin building a future.

These outcomes are not incidental. They are the result of intentional, well-designed programs that combine housing with the well-being and skill development assistance youth need to navigate early adulthood.

The Role of Collaboration in Housing Solutions

Addressing youth homelessness not only requires critical programs and services but coordinated efforts across sectors, bringing together organizations, funders and community partners to ensure every young person has the housing, supports, and opportunities they deserve to thrive.

Partnerships like this demonstrate how aligned efforts can expand access to housing and services, while also strengthening the broader system.

By working together, it becomes possible to respond not only to immediate needs, but to create pathways that help prevent future homelessness.

A Partnership Rooted in Impact

Partners for Affordable Housing works to connect capital, partners and projects that can accelerate community-led housing solutions.

Through this work, Partners helped facilitate a $900,000 anonymous gift in support of Covenant House Toronto’s Bridge Program, helping to expand access to transitional housing for youth.

This investment reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that young people have not only a place to stay, but the support systems needed to build independent futures.

By aligning philanthropic capital with proven, community-based programs, it becomes possible to strengthen and scale solutions that respond to the complexity of youth homelessness.

Looking Ahead

Ending youth homelessness requires sustained investment, strong partnerships and a continued focus on solutions that work.

Partners for Affordable Housing remains committed to working alongside organizations like Covenant House Toronto to align capital, partners and projects that can accelerate impact.

Stories like Mickey’s are a reminder that with the right support at the right time, young people can move beyond crisis and build futures defined by possibility.
